Literature
Twelve Down
Another tally scratched
Another icy chill
Another drunken shout
Another naive wish
Will this be the time
when we reach our goals?
Or shall we once again
be left with disappointments?
Breath catches in my chest
Freezes in my nose
A puff of fog rattles out
And I decide to hope

Doldrums
adrift & lifeless, disinterested yet lingering
the doldrums have taken hold of us
we can see emptiness to the horizon
but still nervously glance over our shoulders
the fear is gone, no more constant worry
concerns are left far behind. but what is left?
this freedom is a prison. we can choose any path
but there are no paths here to take
an empty, vacuous expanse of life, time
it's all ticking away, leaking, seeping
no amount of bailing can stop the fact that
we chose this spot to anchor
and here it is that we will go under
never more to flee in terror
never more to leap with joy
the crew has mutinied
and now here we are
listlessly floating
alone and trapped
in routine
no more dreams.

Lullaby
A smooth, cool fabric of sound and light
the coppery-yellow of sodium streetlights whispering
through swaying branches and a frosted window
the whalesong of distance traffic on the freeway glows
from behind hills, around sleeping homes and trees
quietly in the greyness, I reach out of bed
rest my hand on the wall, too warm under quilts
grasp some cold, bring together the threads of
nighttime into a tapestry which finally soothes
just enough to sink comfortably into slumber.

Beacon
I can see it now
although long passed
a silent beacon in the night
the world frozen in time
my breath caught so as not to disturb
the sanctity of that moment, to keep it
and I will always be there, it never
stopped shining, dawn never came and
eternally I lie there, six years old
and dreamlessly gazing into the eye
of stillness itself, accompanied only
by an inaudible hum my ear feels
should exist. The next breath that
I logically must take is a lifetime away,
guarded by the memory of
an ebon countryside and wailing loons.

In the Dark
The glare of the sun fades
as subtle colors play across
the horizon, and then the
darkness heralds the night.
Where the birds and the
clouds played hours before,
now there is silence and
a blanket of stars.
The streets of the city
that were packed and hurried
now are alone except for the
occasional traveler.
The city's life supported
by the yellow glow of
sodium light, each beacon
mobbed by countless moths.
And further astray, you
can hear the crickets sing
and a cool breeze blow
through the trees.
Here you can see yourself
as the last person on Earth,
alone with a dark only lit
by streetlights and stars.

Literature
It's Not The Frost That Gets You
held fast in winter's grasp
once more, at least, I know my task
can feel the call passed through the fall
but cannot move to save my soul
it was never there, anyway at all
and so I stand, held 'gainst the land
the vicious breeze in which I freeze
has pinned me down, and now I know
this always was the way I'd go.

Nostalgia
You really never can go back
A moment past is soon forgotten
At least by time itself
While we scramble after motes of dust
The intangible becomes frangible
It will always elude us
Dear friends will be lost
Good times left unremembered
Former passions thrown away
All that's left is this damn ennui
A longing for yellowed, dusty memories
And a growing sense of conviction:
Nostalgia sucks.

Cosmology
In the beginning,
there was nothing.
Then: Chaos.
Heat and light
and noise and things
all were the same.
Out of the chaos
I came, the first
of my kind.
Soon I was joined
by others, and we
huddled together.
Then the first
darkness came,
and all was quiet.
Together we floated,
until we came upon
a great gathering.
Here we stayed,
playing games of
'Who am I now?'
We were the sun.
We were mountains.
We were every person.
And then,
the darkness returned,
and the quiet.
We went our different
ways, not knowing we'd
never meet again.
My kind began to die,
fewer and fewer,
over the eons.
I was the last, then
there was nothing,
In the end.

Ghost Story
In cliche: it howls
Really more of a wail, an intermittent one at that
A mournful sound; lost love, old pain, forgotten tragedy
Whistling combines with sobbing; ethereal
Accompanied by a chorus of cracks, snaps, and shudders
It's easy to see how ghost stories began
In old houses on windy nights.

deviantART. I remember remembering that place. I used to go there an even longer bunch years ago.

Yep, it's rediscovery time once again. Last time? Pretty much lasted one visit. We'll see!

In the meantime, here's a bunch of poetry. Enjoy! And if I feel motivated enough, maybe tomorrow I'll search through my photo folder for a similar dump in that category.
